Recursion (2018) is a VR game built for the Oculus Rift. It was part of my show, Refrain, which observes the unreliability of memory and the unique perception of reality that results from these accumulated personal mythologies. While the work in the Refrain series focused on the ‘noise’ of memory- or the memories that seem insignificant in spite of their resilience- Recursion counterbalances with a specific memory of a specific place and time. The game is set in my first apartment, reconstructed from memory in virtual space, in the midst of an anxiety attack. Imagine if the world outside no longer exists, and the only space left in the universe is the room that you are in. What happens when you open the door?
